Become a Census Taker

Temporary part-time census taker jobs are excellent for retirees.
The Census Bureau will hire over one million workers for the 2010 count. The majority of hiring will take place in the spring of 2010. If you would like to prepare for the upcoming recruitment effort, you may go to the site and download and print the Census Practice Test. The practice test is similar to the actual test, which measures basic skills, abilities, and knowledge required to perform a variety of census jobs.

Bilingual applicants are needed for census jobs.
Most applicants for census taker jobs must be U.S. citizens though bilingual candidates who are non-citizens may be hired as well.  All applicants must pass a multiple choice test and have a driver's license and have use of a car. The test is available in English or Spanish.

Average pay is $12 to $13 an hour and schedules are 20 to 30 hours a week.
Most positions are for door-to-door census takers--those people who did not respond to written questionnaires.

There are also other jobs that are clerical or supervisory in nature according to census officials.

If you have already applied for a census taker job, your application will remain active and you do not need to reapply. However, if you need to update your contact information provided on your application, you may do so by calling the toll-free Jobs Line at 1-866-861-2010 where you will be routed to your Local Census Office.
