Executive Help to Overcome Age Bias in Job Searches

Be Prepared.  Acknowledge that you could encounter age discrimination during your search and be prepared to counter stereotypes by demonstrating an ability to adapt to change, a comfort with relevant technology, and enthusiasm for tackling the challenges that lie ahead.  

Differentiate Yourself.  Companies are always looking for candidates that will improve their net income.  To set yourself apart from your peers, who may have less experience than you, focus on accomplishments that improved your past employers’ bottom line.  Become a solution in search of a problem. 

Use Your Existing Network.  Your years of experience also mean you have more contacts to tap who are likely to be in a position to help you get your foot in the door.  Half the battle of making a job change is getting that first interview.  This opportunity is far more likely to come from your network than answering ads, where you’re at greater risk of being screened out due to age because the person reviewing your resume has no additional information or motivation to speak with you. 

Stay Positive.  There’s little you can do about the possibility of discrimination.  Rather than dwell on what might happen, focus on ensuring your actions and reactions are always positive and forward focused. Don’t become discouraged; move on to connections and organizations who see your value.
