Every year more and more people are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. As baby boomers come of age, the number of people afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease is expected to reach 13.8 million by 2050. This is millions more than previously expected. Of the millions who have this disease today, as many as half don't have specific arrangements to help them get care.Health care costs for those with the disease and for people who have other forms of dementia are more than three times higher than costs for older Americans who are not afflicted.
Every 70 seconds, someone in the USA develops Alzheimer's. The disease slowly erodes the brain and eventually the body and can drag out for years, placing financial burdens on families and the medical system, the report says. Go to www.alz.org/index.asp to reach the Alzheimer's Association Website where you will find the latest Alzheimer research, news, information on clinical trials, early detection information, message boards and much more.

The Expense of Dementia and Alzheimer's
The costs for end of life caring for a person with dementia or Alzheimer's is often underestimated. It is substantially more than treating those with cancer or heart disease.
Average costs during the last 5 years of life:
Some or most of this expense is paid for by insurance, Medicare* and Medicaid** but a substantial amount must be paid out of pocket by the family.
In most cases the full cost of care by family caregivers is not included in estimates as a good deal of time is provided as "helping out" and there is no cost figure against this. There is also no estimate as to how much lost income family care providers would have earned if they were not involved in the care giving.
* Medicare covers inpatient hospital care and some of the doctors' fees and other medical items for people with Alzheimer's or dementia who are age 65 or older
**Medicaid has rules limiting the assets a patient and the patient's spouse can own while qualifying for the program.
